Terry Blunt on YouTube – 1

I’m doing Terry’s story in yet a different way from any of the previous ones.  Consistency is good, I know, but I’m still trying to figure out the way I like best.  For this story, I have 6 podcast chapters, but only 2 chapters on YouTube.  I’m going to post all of them separately.  Here’s the first YouTube Chapter.

If you already listened to the first podcast, you will see that this movie has bits of it in there.  It’s the highlights from the first three audio chapters, along with some really great pictures that Terry Blunt took.  For more about Terry Blunt, see the previous post.  Watch below:

The interview is Terry Blunt and me, Caroline Raisler.  The music is by David McMahon.

Podcast 4 – Terry Blunt – Chapter 1

Terry Blunt is the former director of the Connecticut Valley Action Program in Western Massachusetts.  Chapter 1 is his biography – he’s devoted his career to land conservation, first working at The Nature Conservancy, then the Connecticut River Watershed Council, and finally the Department of Environmental Management, now Department of Conservation and Recreation.  He recently retired from that and now has a consulting service, Conservation Works LLC.

He talks about what inspired him to work in conservation – and Aldo Leopold is top on that list for him, as he is on mine.

Podcast 3 Sarah Charlop-Powers Chapter 2

This is the second part of Sarah Charlop-Powers’ podcast, in which she talks about another project she’s involved in.  She’s working with the Jonathan Rose Company to plan for management and stewardship of a new greenway in the South Bronx.

You can download the audio in any format you like here. Or listen to it below:

Stewardship Stories 3 – Sarah Charlop-Powers Chapter 1

Sarah Charlop-Powers is a classmate of mine at the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies, and kindly agreed to be interviewed by me.  I wanted to interview her, not just because I think she’s awesome, but also because I’d heard some about her experiences at Scenic Hudson and thought they’d make a good podcast.  As it turns out, those experiences are only half of what she had to talk about.

I’m doing this podcast yet another way.  This time, both the audio and the pictures are in two parts.  The audio in the YouTube and the audio at Archive.org are almost identical, but I had to edit the audio in YouTube a bit more, because of the 10 minute time limit.  The audio only parts are about 11 minutes long.

So, this post is the first chapter.  You can download the audio here, or listen here or below.

Sarah Charlop-Powers Chapter 1 (11 minutes)

Or, if you prefer to watch it with pictures provided by Sarah, here you go:

As I said above, pictures were all given to me by Sarah, except for the map of the Hudson Valley.  David McMahon provided the music, as usual.

Some things that Sarah mentioned in the interview:

  • The New York Botanical Gardens
  • Scenic Hudson’s Mount Beacon Park.
  • New York State Park adjacent to Mount Beacon.
  • Dia:Beacon Museum (this is the art museum she mentioned that sparked a wave of gentrification)
  • The Student Conservation Assocation.  She and I talked for a while about our experiences with them.  She led a high school crew and later worked for them.  I was on a high school crew and later did a conservation internship through them.  I didn’t end up putting that in the podcast, though.  But it’s an organization worth looking into, for sure.
  • SCA’s urban commuter crews.  This is what the pictures are of – the SCA crew she had working on Mount Beacon park.
  • I thought you also might be interested in Beacon, NY’s Wikipedia page.  A lot of what Sarah talked about is referenced on this page, too.

Tony Coyler-Pendas Chapter 1

As promised, the first slideshow about Tony.  If you’ve already listened to the audio in the last post – it’s the same, sorry.  The difference is this one has pictures.

In Chapter 1, Tony talks about his work in land conservation and what it has meant to him.  Note – the baby he mentions that he and wife were expecting has since been born.  Look what can happen while you’re producing a podcast!

Tony and I are the ones talking. Music is by David McMahon.  The photos are from CLC’s website.

See the post on Tony’s podcast for more information.

Podcast 2: Tony Coyler-Pendas

For my second podcast, I decided to have one long audio podcast, which you can download (in any format) here.   Or you can listen to it below.

Podcast 2: Tony Coyler-Pendas (22 minutes)

If you’d rather watch it on your computer, with pictures, I’ve split it into 5 chapters, of which I will put up one each day, just to keep things interesting.

This podcast is about Tony Coyler-Pendas, director of land protection at the Columbia Land Conservancy.  They are a small land trust in Columbia County, near Albany.  Sarah Charlop-Powers, who you will meet in the next podcast, suggested I speak with him.  She was right – he had interesting stories  – you’ll see.

Tony and I are the ones talking on the podcast. Music is by David McMahon.
